Paper Towels – Not A Bunch Of Hot Air, Most Hygienic Option

While it’s been documented for years that paper towels are the most hygienic choice when it comes to drying hands, a recent report truly caught our eye.

A study conducted earlier this year in part by Dyson Limited, makers of the Dyson Airblade hand dryer, reported that “rubbing with paper towels appeared to be the best means of reducing bacterial loading on the fingertips.”

To examine the issue further, these findings correlate with the results of an earlier study conducted by the University of Westminster, London. That study found that when participants used paper towels to dry their hands, the number of all types of bacteria on the hands was reduced by up to 77 percent, and that air dryers actually increased the number of most bacteria on the hands – up to 254 percent more for warm air dryers and 42 percent more for jet air dryers.

Recognizing Green Links: Distributor Achievement Awards

We’re excited to recognize 27 North American distributor partners with our third annual achievement awards for their dedication to furthering environmentally preferable products. By offering to their commercial and industrial customers tissue paper products made from 100 percent recycled fiber, instead of virgin fiber, these distributors collectively conserved 255,700 trees (the equivalent of 638 American football fields) and avoided emissions of greenhouse gases equivalent to 12,785 cars off the road for one year. A real demonstration of the power a greener supply chain can truly have!

It should also be noted that approximately 20 percent of the distributor’s total green house gas savings were achieved through the sales of Cascades Tissue Group’s North River products, which use Green-e certified renewable energy credits to offset 100 percent of the electricity used in their production. Cascades Tissue Group’s annual 20,000 MWh of wind energy credits are sourced from a wind farm in Charles City, Iowa and supplied by leading renewable energy developer and marketer Community Energy, Inc.

Office Depot Now Offering Moka Bathroom Tissue

Are consumers willing to change the color of a product they use daily to be more planet friendly? As you may recall, this was the question posed in January when Cascades Moka Bathroom Tissue, a non-dyed beige colored bathroom tissue that’s not just made from 100% recycled fibers, but uses recovered corrugated boxes in its recipe and eliminates chemical whitening, was launched.

The latest development is that inquiries about the product – currently available only on the commercial, away-from-home market – has been strong over the last several weeks. As further evidence, Office Depot (NYSE: ODP), a leading global provider of office supplies and services, today announced it will be making Moka available nationwide at OfficeDepot.com and through its Business Solutions Division sales team to meet consumer demand.

“As customers are increasingly watching environmental trends and subsequently adopting them for their households or businesses, the demand for innovative, green products is on the rise,” said Suzanne Blanchet, Chief Executive Officer for Cascades Tissue Group.  “We are pleased to help Office Depot deliver on its promise to ‘buy greener’ and ‘sell greener’ by helping them become one of the first resellers to offer Cascades Moka.”

Office Depot was recognized by Newsweek as the #1 Greenest Large Retailer in 2010 and the company has implemented a range of sustainable initiatives that can be found in its annual Corporate Citizenship Report.

“At Office Depot, we have a global environmental vision to buy greener, be greener and sell greener,” said Yalmaz Siddiqui, Senior Director of Environmental Strategy for Office Depot. “We know our greenest customers seek the environmentally-preferable options in every product category – and Cascades Moka gives them a credible new choice in bathroom tissue.”

Unroll The Love This Valentine’s Day

We were thrilled to see Cascades Moka bathroom tissue listed as the #1 environmentally-preferable Valentine’s Day gift idea by Green Manufacturer in this recent blog post, which cheekily noted, “nothing says I love you like tissue untouched by bleach.”

Joking aside, we couldn’t agree more – especially if Mother Nature is on your Valentine’s Day gift list. After all, what a better way to show your love for the environment than by purchasing 100% recycled, unbleached toilet paper?

Happy Valentines Day from Cascades Tissue Group

    4 Questions with…Peter Corbyn

Peter Corbyn is the Chief GreenNexxian at GreenNexxus. The GreenNexxus Employee Sustainability Platform (Green ESP) provides organizations with an easy to execute web platform that directly connects employees to sustainability strategy.

Peter answered a few questions for our “4 Questions” series, where we ask green leaders to tell us a bit about their work.

What are the major sustainability initiatives your institution is focused on?
Currently, our two primary areas of focus are engaging employees through our Employee Sustainability Platform – at home and in the workplace – as well as engaging consumers with our soon-to-be-released One Million Acts of Green Facebook app.

The Employee Sustainability Platform provides an organization with an easy to execute web platform that directly connects employees to an organization’s sustainability strategy. One Million Acts of Green will give individuals and organizations an easy way to determine their carbon footprint reduction to ‘visualize’ the difference they are making through their actions.

What particular steps is your institution taking to green your business practices?
Since we’re an IT company, electricity use would be our biggest environmental impact, however we use Bullfrog Power, which is Canada’s 100 percent green energy provider. By choosing Bullfrog Power’s green energy, we’re reducing our environmental impact, supporting the development of new renewable generation in Canada and helping to create a cleaner world for today and tomorrow.

What are you doing to encourage your stakeholders to use less paper, whether it is office paper or single-use towel and tissue items?
Using less paper is an act of green within our One Million Acts of Green customer Facebook campaign and Employee Sustainability Platform.

In two sentences or less, what is the best advice you have for newcomers to the sustainability field?
For professionals: get started with environmental savings that lead to financial savings. Then ask for bigger cheques from upper management once they see success.

For consumers: saving the planet is like trying to lose weight – make behavior changes that are sustainable for you, i.e. how do you keep the weight off long-term?

Cascades Tissue Group Reaches a Decade of Chlorine Free Product Recognition

On a daily basis, buyers and end users are increasingly interested in knowing more about the processes in which everyday products are made. At Cascades we welcome this movement because not only are we committed to being an open and transparent towel and tissue company, but more importantly, manufacturing processes can have a big impact on the world around us and on the health of future generations.

Cascades Tissue Group is proud to have been awarded, for a tenth consecutive year, a certificate for meeting the CFPA (Chlorine Free Products Association) Processed Chlorine Free (PCF) Sustainable Manufacturing Initiative (SMI) requirements and to surpass industry standards set anywhere in the world. Cascades Tissue Group will continue to post the PCF logo on its Cascades®, North River® and Cascades Elite™ branded paper products.

After a thorough, physical inspection of the plants, operating procedures, pertinent documents, and a review of the ‘chain of custody’ for all fiber, the Chlorine Free Products Association (CFPA) found the audited Cascades Tissue Group facilities to uphold the high standards described in the SMI PCF Certification guidelines.
Notably, the association applauded Cascades for its transparency and accountability in terms of environmental impact of its manufacturing process.

    Introducing… Cascades Moka

As Announced in WSJ: Cascades Tissue Group Unrolls Cascades Moka Bathroom Tissue

Cascades Tissue Group is excited to share the news about the launch of Cascades Moka™, a novel 100 percent recycled BEIGE bathroom tissue available to the North American commercial market.  In addition to being the first bathroom tissue to eliminate chemical whitening, which is done only for aesthetics, Moka gets 20 percent of its pulp mix from recovered corrugated boxes, reducing 25 percent of environmental impact in production.

Further examination of this question can found in this Wall Street Journal Cascades Moka feature story.

“Beige is the new green, at least as it relates to towel and tissue,” said Cascades Tissue Group CEO Suzanne Blanchet, who personally conceived and championed Cascades Moka bath tissue’s development. “The last several years have brought about countless habit changes meant to preserve the environment. The quality of this bath tissue hasn’t been sacrificed one bit, so adjusting to a new color seems like a small step to take for even greater sustainability.”
